Neighbor Jon Coston lives near where police say his neighbors died. The neighbor says about three weeks ago, he saw 87-year-old Donna Mayfield outside in a wheelchair. He has struggled with muscular dystrophy his whole life, including with walking. After seeing Donna in a wheelchair, he wanted to talk to her. “Never got around to it. This is kind of heartbreaking,” Coston said. Investigators believe Frank Mayfield called 911 and said his wife had been shot. Ironically, the call came at 9:11 am When police officers arrived, they found the garage door wide open. Upstairs, they found Donna Mayfield dead in a hospital bed and her husband just 5 to 10 feet away, also dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. “I do know there was a firearm that was in the area where the male was recovered,” Overland Park police officer John Lacy said in a press conference Thursday afternoon. The incident was unknown to the neighborhood until police arrived. “Never thought it would happen this close, especially when I was outside and never heard one gunshot,” Coston said.
